Savory and Delicious Chicken Roll-Ups

This is a family favorite. It’s such a family favorite that I was unsure about whether to share it, and double-checked with my mom about making the recipe public. This is one of those foods that becomes a comfort food, the one your kids will request over and over. We usually requested this or spaghetti on our birthdays. I haven’t ever seen anyone else make this recipe unless my mom has given them the recipe, even though it’s not original to her. They look like a pastry, but they’re savory and perfect for dinner. Add a vegetable or salad on the side and they’re a complete meal.

I don’t think we’ve ever encountered someone who doesn’t like these. I’ve brought them to my weekly church group (we start it off with a potluck-style dinner). Multiple people went back for seconds. My brother introduced them to a few families while on a mission for his church and they all loved them. Every guest my parents or I have had that we’ve made this for liked them.

When my husband came into the picture, this became one of his favorite dinners too.

I mean, even my brother liked him growing up, and he lived pretty much on different varieties of pasta, pizza, and tacos.

Seriously, they’re pretty much a sure thing.

Who doesn’t want a sure thing at dinnertime?

When you read the ingredients, they may or may not sound like a great combination. The sauce still surprises me. But trust me, they really are delicious, and you have to try them.

Can I talk these up enough? I don’t think I can. Seriously, even the leftovers disappear so fast.

Now, these do use some canned dough, and I haven’t tried making my own for them. If you make your own dough, you want to do something as close to the Pillsbury crescent rolls in taste and shape as you can.

These chicken roll-ups are sure to become a family favorite
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 and grease a large baking sheet.
  2. Boil the chicken until cooked through, then cube into small pieces.
  3. Mix together all the filling ingredients--cream cheese, milk, butter, salt, pepper, and onion. Add in the chicken last. Cream together thoroughly.
  4. Spoon a tablespoon or two of filling into each crescent roll and then wrap the roll around the filling, closing it completely. How many cans of crescent rolls you'll need depends on what kind you get--the big and flaky ones usually only take two cans.
  5. Mix together bread crumbs and garlic in one bowl, and have the melted butter in another bowl.
  6. Dip each crescent roll first in the butter, coating it completely, and then in the bread crumbs until it's got a thin even layer. Set on the baking tray.
  7. Roll any extra dough into crescents.
  8. Bake for 20 minutes, or until the dough is golden.
  9. While it's baking, mix together the sour cream and the soup in a small pot and heat on medium-low, stirring occasionally.
  10. Serve the chicken roll-ups with the sauce on top.
